Scott Reid Wins Lanark-Carleton Nomination
April 16, 2003Kanata-Scott Reid, MP for Lanark-Carleton, is proud to have received an overwhelming vote of confidence from local Canadian Alliance party members at a nomination meeting last night. The C.A. party constitution requires a vote be held even though Reid ran unopposed. Voting stations were located at the Perth Library and the Kanata Legion. He received the unanimous support of voters.
Speaking to supporters at the Kanata Legion, Reid thanked his supporters for their continued faith in him. “Lanark-Carleton forms a special place in Ontario. Lanark is Ontario’s Maple Syrup capital and Kanata is Canada’s High-Tech capital. I am honoured to be chosen to carry on representing this riding.” Reid stated.
Reid pointed with pride to his accomplishments over the past 2 ½ years:
- He has been active in attaining the release of Canadian Falun Gong practitioners imprisoned in China for their religious beliefs. As a direct result of a motion introduced by Reid in the House of Commons last October, seven individuals have now been freed, and some have been able to come to Canada.
- He assisted in breaking the impasse over the Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute, which led to the announcement that a new school will be constructed.
- Reid fought to have Employment Insurance service delivery improved during the high-volume period of large High-Tech lay offs. As a result of these efforts, processing time was lowered from 2 – 3 months to less than one month.
- As the Opposition critic for Official Languages, Reid says he will continue to fight against the federal government policy of continually reducing the number of Public Service jobs open to non-bilingual Canadians. Reid points out that 2/3 of jobs Public Service jobs in the National Capital Region are designated “bilingual essential.” “Every time a new job is designated bilingual-essential,” Reid stated, “it is closed to the 80% of Canadians who aren’t bilingual. That’s just not fair.”
The accomplishment Reid is most proud of is his record of consulting constituents, through referenda, on major policy issues. Reid has twice voted against his party on major pieces of legislation, following consultations with constituents. He also made the decision to donate his MP pay increase to charity, following a “constituency referendum” in August 2001. So far, he has donated $42,000 to purchase defibrillators, CPR training, and supplies for local food cupboard.
