Scott Reid Proposes New Name for New Riding: ‘Lanark – Frontenac – Kingston’

April 26, 2013

Ottawa – Yesterday, in testimony to a parliamentary committee, MP Scott Reid proposed changes to the coming redistribution of federal ridings.

Reid proposed that the new riding of Lanark-Frontenac be changed to Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston.

“The riding will include much of Kingston,” Reid noted. “So it’s important to have its name reflect this fact.”

Reid also proposed that the riding’s boundaries be extended to include all areas which had formerly been part of Pittsburgh Township. “In the second half of the Twentieth Century, Pittsburgh Township was repeatedly divided between federal ridings, in one redistribution after another,” Reid explained. “It was finally re-united in the 2004 redistribution, but the boundaries currently proposed by the Boundary Commission would split it once more. I propose to keep the old township united—within the boundaries of the riding of Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston.”

Speaking after the presentation, Reid explained “The area North of Highway 401 has historical and cultural reasons for staying together. It used to be known as Pittsburgh Township, but was amalgamated with Kingston Township in 1998, and has been split up in various redistributions since 1987. This proposal allows Pittsburgh Township to be united, keeps all of rural Kingston within the boundaries of a single constituency, and keeps urban Kingston together like it has been since the days of Sir John A. MacDonald himself.

The redistribution began in 2012 and will be completed before the next federal election, which will take place in 2015.
