Scott Reid Keeps Spending Low, Constituent Service High
December 17, 2014Ottawa — Local MP Scott Reid’s office expenses remain low in most categories, recently released documents reveal. During the second quarter of fiscal year 2014-2015, Mr. Reid spent $0 in five out of eight expense categories – service contracts, travel, gifts, advertising, and printing – and his $33.14 in hospitality spending places him within the lowest-spending 20 of Canada’s 308 MPs that served throughout the full fiscal quarter.
According to Mr. Reid, there are several reasons that continue to help him keep his costs lower than most other MPs. “I live close to Ottawa so I don’t rely on government-paid transportation to travel to and from Ottawa. I also believe that MPs get more perks than we need to do our jobs effectively. I rarely ask taxpayers to pay for things like hospitality and advertising for myself.” Reid added, “If I do incur these costs, it is my duty to keep them as low as possible.”
Providing services to constituents has remained a priority for Mr. Reid, shown in part by his expenses for staff salaries which were highest among MPs for the quarter. “My staff is one of the hardest working in Canada,” Reid said. “They’re really the ones who help people with everything from dealing with Service Canada to applying for a passport to getting congratulatory messages for milestone occasions”.
Expenditures for every MP are now released quarterly, with yearly figures released in November of each year for the most recent fiscal year. The figures for 2013-2014 were released in November and the latest quarterly figures were released earlier this week. All figures are available on the Parliamentary website, www.parl.gc.ca.
