Scott Reid Applauds New Immigration Laws
March 9, 2012Ottawa – Today, Citizenship Minister Jason Kenney announced new measures to crack down on immigrants who use fake marriages to come to Canada. Under the proposed changes, a foreign husband or wife would need to live together in a legitimate relationship with a spouse who is a citizen for two years after becoming a permanent resident in order to become a full Canadian citizen.
If they do not meet this requirement, the applicant will not receive Canadian citizenship and permanent resident status will be revoked.
“I’m proud of all our government has been doing to tighten up our immigration laws, which used to have far too many loopholes just waiting to be exploited by illegitimate foreign migrants,” commented Scott Reid. “This is just the latest change that our Conservative government has quietly made without much fanfare – but that doesn’t mean I don’t think they’re all very important changes.”
So far, the Conservative government has also made changes to require physical proof of identity (uncovering one’s face) at citizenship ceremonies and has made a strong, successful effort to remove thousands of fraudulent immigrants from our country.
The Conservatives have also introduced a new bill that will, amongst other things, crack down on illegitimate refugee claimants coming from democratic countries like Mexico and Hungary.
“This new bill will put a stop to foreign criminals, human smugglers and bogus refugees abusing Canada’s immigration system and receiving lucrative taxpayer-funded health and social benefits.” Reid continued, “At the same time, this bill will provide protection more quickly to those who are truly in need.
