Reid: Why Won’t Any Liberals Vote to Scrap the Gun Registry Anymore?
May 28, 2010Ottawa – Local MP Scott Reid today stood in the House of Commons today to point out that Liberals should listen to their constituents, not their Party Whips, and vote against keeping the Long-Gun Registry.
“The Public Safety Committee heard yesterday from a front line policeman who stated that the Long-Gun Registry ‘Represents the largest and most contentious single waste of taxpayers’ dollars and that it can do nothing to prevent criminals from obtaining firearms’,” Reid stated. “Liberal MPs should listen to their constituents rather than their party whips before voting on Bill C-391.”
Introduced by Conservative MP Candace Hoeppner last year, Bill C-391would eliminate the requirement for owners of long-guns to register their firearms to the Federal Long-Gun Registry.
Recently Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff revoked an earlier vow to allow his MPs to vote according to the wishes of their constituents on Bill C-391. Mr. Ignatieff now states that he will “whip” the vote on Bill C-391, which means that he expects every Liberal MP to vote against it.
