Reid Welcomes Family-friendly Budget

May 3, 2006

Ottawa – Local Member of Parliament Scott Reid welcomed the new Conservative Government’s first budget, which was delivered yesterday by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

The budget delivers on the Conservative Party’s key promises from the election campaign, including an immediate cut in the GST from 7% to 6%, and a $1,200 annual Child Care Benefit for every child under the age of six.

“I am pleased to see that our new government is acting quickly to deliver on the promises we made in the election campaign,” Reid stated. “This budget delivers concrete support for every single family in Canada.”

Reid was particularly enthusiastic to see the Conservative’s Universal Child Care Benefit presented in the government’s first budget. The $1,200 annual payment will be delivered in monthly instalments to the parents of every young child in the country.

“This government recognizes that the real child care experts are parents themselves. Whether their children are cared for by a stay-at-home parent or in a formal childcare centre, every young family will receive direct funding with the new Child Care Benefit.”
