Reid Happy to Finally See Progress for Canada’s Correctional Officers
June 5, 2006Ottawa – Local Member of Parliament Scott Reid welcomed the recent tentative agreement between the Federal Government and the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers – Syndicat des Agent Correctionnels du Canada (UCCO-SACC-CSN) that was announced on June 1st, 2006.
This agreement signals the end to a four-year stalemate in contract negotiations. Members of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers have been without a contract since May 31, 2002. The Honourable John Baird has met four times with the representatives from the Correctional Officers’ bargaining agents since his appointment as President of the Treasury Board.
“I am very pleased to see that a tentative deal has been struck,” Reid stated. “For almost four years, Canada’s Correctional Officers were very patient while the previous government failed to negotiate an acceptable contract. I am glad that the new Conservative government has been able to reach a tentative deal so that these negotiations can finally come to an end.”
The agreement provides for a number of measures to be included in a new collective agreement that will be in effect until May 31, 2010. Members of UCCO-SACC-CSN will be called upon to vote on the tentative agreement, with the results of this vote expected before the end of June.
“Correctional Officers often work under stressful and difficult conditions and it is about time that the government recognized the tremendous contribution to the public service that they have made with a collective deal. I am confident that this tentative deal will lead to a contract that is fair and reasonable for Correctional Officers, for the employer, and for Canadian taxpayers.”
