On Thursday October 13th a member of my staff attended an Enbridge Pipeline Line 9 Emergency Response Simulation inside the riding just outside Kingston. The exercise had a set of goals and objectives; including testing response times of existing emergency personnel. Coordinating with local emergency personnel, and evaluating existing response measures. Stakeholders were also invited to participate in the exercise, with many excepting the invitation to measure their unique set of goals in the simulation.
In this exercise they set-up a central command post, several decontamination sites complete with a mobile command post and deployed a fleet of watercraft to complete a mock water cantonment and cleanup exercise.
The personnel onsite were working in tough conditions with cool winds and choppy water. We may never need a response like this, but it's worth noting that local authorities and companies are working together to test and improve their skills to mitigate the damage that could be caused in the event of a spill.
