News Release, Collins Lake Solar Project

CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE SCOTT REID STANDS WITH SOUTH FRONTENAC RESIDENTS IN OPPOSITION TO COLLINS LAKE SOLAR PROJECT

PERTH – Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston Conservative Candidate Scott Reid joined with South Frontenac Residents to oppose the Collins Lake industrial solar project proposed by Suncor (Suncor Energy Products Inc.) and Canadian Solar Solutions Inc. (Canadian Solar).

This project is not supported by the residents or the municipal council in South Frontenac. Council overwhelmingly rejected this proposal while 1 in 5 residents in the surrounding area signed a letter and petition urging Ontario Environment Minister Glen Murray to reject the proposal.

In the letter, residents outlined their concerns about the negative impacts the industrial solar project would have in their community. They cited safety concerns, decreases in tourism, taking valuable agricultural land out of production for this project rather than finding a suitable industrial area. The letter went on to say that residents generally aren’t opposed to “green energy” but they feel there was a lack of meaningful consultation.

“Given the significant public opposition by South Frontenac residents and council and the fact there are other communities who would welcome such projects, I sincerely hope the Wynne government will pay close attention and place significant merit upon objections made by the community as it reviews the project proposed by Suncor and Canadian Solar,” said Reid.

“The voices of the community should be compelling factors in the decision-making process.”
