MP Scott Reid Seeks Conservative Nomination in Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington

January 15, 2004

Carleton Place – Member of Parliament Scott Reid announced he is seeking the Conservative nomination in the new riding of Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington.

When asked why he is seeking the nomination, Reid replied: “I believe a Member of Parliament should live in the riding they represent. And I can’t think of a better place in Canada in which to live.”

MP Reid says he prefers representing a rural riding. “The rural and small town issues that matter to people in the counties of Lanark, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington need to be heard, but the Liberal agenda is an urban agenda. I plan to be a voice for rural Ontario in the next election.”

“Canadians don’t want an Ottawa representative in their riding, they want someone who will represent them in Ottawa.” Reid stated. “That’s why my office has resolved thousands of cases for constituents having problems with government. It’s why I am continuing efforts such as the Buy Canadian Beef awareness program to support our farmers and rural economy.”

Reid feels the most important responsibility a Member of Parliament has is to represent his or her constituents in Ottawa. This is why he has held five Constituency referendums over the past three years, asking constituents how they want him to vote on important pieces of legislation. The first referendum he held in 2001 instructed him to donate his pay raise to charity. Since then he has been using his $21,000 annual pay raise to purchase defibrillators and CPR training to enhance rural emergency health response. He intends to continue and expand this program if re-elected.

As one of the six negotiators in the talks between the CA and PCs, Reid was instrumental in bringing about the merger, which created the Conservative Party of Canada.
