MP Scott Reid Conservative Party Candidate in Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington

March 13, 2004

Carleton Place – Scott Reid, MP for Lanark-Carleton, expressed satisfaction today at his overwhelming victory in the Conservative Party nomination battle for the new federal riding of Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington.

“I’m excited to be the official candidate of the Conservative Party, and honoured by the extent of the mandate that our voters gave to me,” Reid stated. Reid won over eighty percent of the votes cast by Conservative Party members at three locations across the riding. “I never would have imagined that I’d win four out of every five votes from the membership,” Reid said. “This is a remarkable display of unity in our new party. It means that a majority of former Progressive Conservatives as well as a majority of former Canadian Alliance members supported my candidacy, and that I won strong majorities in each of the three counties in our new riding.”

Voting took place at the Napanee High School from 8:30 to 10:30 am, the Sharbot Lake High School from 12:30 to 2:30 pm and the Carleton Place High School from 4:30 to 6:30 pm with the results being announced at 7:30 pm. A tracking poll conducted by Reid’s campaign on the day of the nomination shows that Reid won the vote at all three locations.

Reid also expressed approval at the high voter turnout, noting that it demonstrates that almost nobody in the Conservative Party membership took seriously the request by former MP Bill Vankoughnet to boycott the nomination process. “Voter turnout, as a percentage of eligible voters, was uniformly high at each polling station, and the total turnout was almost identical to the average rate of voter participation in other ridings across the country. Moreover, only two ballots, out of 692 ballots cast, were spoiled.” A high number of spoiled ballots is often a sign of voter disapproval of a nomination process.

Reid went on to declare that “With our party united nationally and locally, I am certain that this riding and many, many more in Ontario will be Conservative after the next federal election.”
