MP Reid Encourages Widespread Political Support for Skills and Initiatives
April 26, 2004SMITHS FALLS – Today, all candidates in the new federal riding of Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington came together in Smiths Falls to show their support for the financially strapped Skills and Initiatives whose funding is just about to run out.
The four federal candidates are John Baranyi (Green Party), Larry McCormick (Liberal), Ross Sutherland, (NDP), and Scott Reid, (Conservative Party) in the new riding of Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington.
Smiths Falls Mayor Dennis Staples and councillor Sterling Bennett also came out to show their support.
Scott Reid commented, “Skills and Initiatives is a unique program, and Smith’s Falls is uniquely lucky to have it. From serving soup on Monday for those in need, to providing employment skills to those wanting to improve themselves, Skills and Initiatives benefits this community.”
Reid noted that it is unusual to find all-party support for any program. “I asked all of my opponents in the upcoming election to come here today to make the point that, even though we disagree on so many things, all of us can see the way in which this benefits the community. Hopefully this message of support will get through to the federal government.”
Skills and Initiatives is a non-profit agency based in Smiths Falls that runs programs, which help low-income individuals establish employments skills while providing a valuable service to the community. Skills and Initiatives sources all levels of government for funding.
“This is not about party lines, this is about supporting a worthwhile organization and ensuring they get the funding necessary to continue their good work. I’m going to keep on fighting, until the money comes through,” Reid stated.
