MP Reid Appointed to Shadow Cabinet as FEDNOR Critic

July 22, 2004

PARLIAMENT HILL – Scott Reid, MP for Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox & Addington, was today appointed to the Shadow Cabinet as the Opposition Critic for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor).

FedNor is an initiative of the Government of Canada aiming to address the economic development needs of Northern Ontario. Working with numerous partners, and through its programs and services, FedNor helps fund community projects as well as other initiatives designed to improve the economic and social well being of the North as a whole.

FedNor also administers the Community Futures Program, which is comprised of locally operated Community Futures Development Corporations (CFDCs) throughout rural Ontario. Along with offering a variety of business services, CFDCs provide financing for private enterprises deemed to provide a benefit to community economic development.

“As the MP for one of Ontario’s most rural ridings, I am tremendously excited at the opportunities that this opens up for me to serve as a spokesman for rural and remote communities across the province,” Mr. Reid stated, “The mandate that I have been given by the Conservative Party and by Stephen Harper will ensure that there is careful Ontario-based scrutiny of programs designed for the needs of Ontario.”

Mr. Reid also expressed pleasure at the inclusion of 8 other Ontario MPs in the Shadow Cabinet. “The new Conservative Party and our Shadow Cabinet will provide Ontarians with better opposition representation than they have had in over a decade,” Mr. Reid observed. “The unhealthy electoral domination of this province by a single party ended with the June 28th election, and I think that Ontarians are going to be very happy with the results of the trust that they have placed in their strong new contingent of Conservative MPs.”
