Mississippi Mills Wants a Reunified Lanark County: Near Unanimous Survey
November 1, 2012Carleton Place – Today local MP Scott Reid released the results of a survey he commissioned to ask Mississippi Mills residents if they prefer to remain in the same Federal Electoral District as the western suburbs of Ottawa, or if they would rather be represented along with the rest of Lanark County.
Respondents gave overwhelming support to the reunification of Lanark County into the same Federal riding. When asked if they prefer Mississippi Mills be in the same riding as the rest of Lanark County or in the same riding as the western part of the city of Ottawa, 83% of respondents chose Lanark County.
“Frankly, I’m not surprised by this result,” commented Scott Reid. “This is almost the same result I got way back in the last redistribution in 2003. Mississippi Mills feels more attachment to Lanark County than it does to places like Kanata or Stittsville.”
In 2003, the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission chose to split Mississippi Mills away from the rest of Lanark County and have it share its representation instead with the western part of the City of Ottawa.
At the time, MP Scott Reid vowed to continue to fight to have all of Lanark County represented as a whole by the same Member of Parliament. Currently the Member of Parliament for Almonte, Ramsay Township, and Pakenham Township is Gordon O’Connor, who also represents Kanata, Stittsville, and West Carleton. The rest of Lanark County is represented by Scott Reid.
The telephone survey canvassed 500 randomly selected residents of Mississippi Mills aged 18 or older. A poll of this size would be considered accurate to within + or – 4.29%, 19 times out of 20.
