Maple Leaf Tartan Now Exclusively Canadian

April 6, 2008

Ottawa – Parliament Hill Local MP Scott Reid, on behalf of the Government of Canada, announced during the Tartan Day celebrations that the Maple Leaf Tartan is now exclusively Canadian.

“I am pleased to announce that Secretary of State Jason Kenney has registered the Maple Leaf Tartan with the Scottish Tartans Authority in Edinburgh in the name of the Dominion of Canada”, Reid said. “This is an important step that ensures that no other country or individual can claim the Maple Leaf Tartan but that it remains Canada’s own.”

Reid further stated, “My personal hope is that it can soon be proclaimed as the National Tartan of Canada.”

The Maple Leaf Tartan incorporates into its weave the colours of the maple leaf through the seasons: green in summer, gold in early autumn, red after the first frost and brown when the leaf has fallen.

Since 1993, National Tartan Day has been celebrated, in Canada on April 6th, which marks the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath. In 1320, the assembled Lairds of Scotland signed this declaration as an appeal to the Pope to support Scottish independence from the English.

This year’s National Tartan Day celebrations were organized by the Sons of Scotland Pipes and Drums under the direction of Pipe Major Bethany Bisaillion. They were accompanied by the dancers of the MacCulloch School of Dance and the Ingleneuk Scottish Country Dancers.

Appropriately, the National Tartan Day celebrations were wrapped up by a stirring performance of “The Maple Leaf Forever”.
