Local MP Scott Reid Commemorates Sir John A. MacDonald Day

January 16, 2007

Ottawa – On Friday in Kingston, Scott Reid, MP for Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox & Addington, laid a wreath on behalf of the Government of Canada to commemorate Sir John A. Macdonald Day. Reid was joined by Mayor Harvey Rosen and the Mother Teresa Catholic School Choir, at a ceremony which took place at the Sir John A. Macdonald memorial in City Park.

“I was honoured to celebrate Sir John A. Macdonald’s contribution as a Father of Confederation,” Reid stated. “We are blessed with the great nation we have today, thanks to the dedication and vision of those like Sir John A.”

Celebrated every January 11th, Sir John A. Macdonald Day was established by Parliament in 2002 to honour the birthday of Canada’s first prime minister. Born in Scotland in 1815, Macdonald was the most important Father of Confederation. As a Member of Parliament, Macdonald represented a number of local districts, including Kingston, Lennox, and Carleton County.

“Locally, we have a very strong connection to our first prime minister – who rose from humble roots right here in our area to become one of Canada’s most important historical figures,” Reid concluded.
