Conservatives Announce Plan to Replace CAIS and Deliver Real Support to Farmers
December 21, 2005CARLETON PLACE – Local Conservative Scott Reid welcomed Stephen Harper’s recent announcement that a Conservative Government will scrap the Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization Program (CAIS) in favour of a new income stabilization program and a separate disaster relief program.
“I have heard first-hand from farmers, how the CAIS Program has forced families to pay heavy deposits just to qualify for support,” Reid stated. “The deposit requirement severely penalizes farmers, who are struggling to balance the books, by forcing them to fork over money that they just can’t spare. In fact, it’s the surest way for the government to cut out those who most need income stabilization from ever qualifying for it.”
The new Conservative income stabilization program will be a simpler, more responsive program, which will properly address costs of production, market revenues, and inventory valuations.
Reid was also pleased with Mr. Harper’s announced plan to inject an extra $500 million a year into farm support programs.
“Farmers deserve an honest government for a change, rather than a government that will give with one hand and take with the other. Our $500 million commitment will be additional funds on top of the existing budget – not a reallocation of resources away from existing farm support programs.“
