One of the many functions of the Food Hub is to act as the intermediary between local producers and the consumer. They help producers with cleaning storage and enhancing end use products that allow local foods make it to market in a timely and efficient manner. The facility is fully compliant and inspected regularly by the Health Unit.
Today Robyn and I visited the non-profit Two Rivers Food Hub located at the Gallipeau Centre in Smiths Falls. We met with Bruce Enloe the General Manager and board member Peter McKenna.
On the tour we met to Adrian Fournier. Adrian operates the Iron Kettle Cafe at the Gallipeau Centre. He also uses the Food Hub Facility for the Meals On Wheels Program which is an initiative coordinated by the Lanark County Community Home Support. In this facilities Adrian can prepare up to 30 meals per day.
We also met with Kevin Bowes a small business operator that rents space and equipment to manufacture his Bowes & Company Fresh Salsa. Kevin markets his salsa to local grocery stores and specialty food markets.
On the tour of the facility we saw some of equipment used in an industrial kitchen. I really liked the Hobard stand mixer.
