Successful Falun Gong Motion Prevents Further Unlawful Imprisonment

November 28, 2002

November 28, 2002

OTTAWA- Scott Reid MP (CA, Lanark-Carleton) is delighted to learn that his recent Motion regarding Falun Gong practitioners unlawfully detained in China has helped to prevent the imprisonment of a further practitioner, and allowed her to reunite with friends here in Canada. Ms. Yuzhi Wang was facing deportation back to China, where she faced certain imprisonment, from the United Arab Emirates. The intervention of the Canadian Falun Gong Association, who presented evidence of Mr. Reid’s motion, secured her release and her safe passage to Canada.

Mr. Reid’s Motion called on Prime Minister Chr├ętien to address the issue of thirteen Falun Gong practitioners with Canadian family ties, unlawfully detained in China, with President Jiang Zemin during the recent APEC summit in Mexico. The Motion gained all-party support, and passed unanimously in the House of Commons on October 24, 2002. This was a rare and commendable occurrence for Private Members Motions, which rarely pass with such overwhelming support.

Ms. Wang, who had already faced brutal imprisonment in China for following the peaceful Falun Gong practice, had escaped to the United Arab Emirates where she was arrested by officials. She faced deportation and further imprisonment before the intervention of the Canadian Falun Gong Association secured her safe release. The evidence presented to officials included Mr. Reid’s motion, which played a pivotal role in ensuring Ms. Wang’s freedom.

Mr. Reid expressed his delight that the motion has already had such a positive impact, but stresses that there are still 13 innocent victims with family here in Canada still being brutally imprisoned in China. He said in response,

‘This urgent issue must still be addressed by our Government. I am overjoyed that Ms. Wang is now safe and free from the horrors of the Chinese Human Rights violations, but we must remember that 13 individuals are still imprisoned, awaiting our help to secure their release, and to reunite them with their families in Canada.’

‘I warmly welcome Ms. Wang to our country, and look forward to being able to extend this welcome to other Falun Gong practitioners freed from cruel persecution in China. I hope that my motion will continue to have such a positive impact on the lives of the innocent Falun Gong victims.
