MP Reid Calls on the Minister of Public Safety to fulfill his own demands, and equip RCMP vehicles with AEDsNovember 21, 2016
For Immediate Release,
November 21, 2016- Today, Mr. Reid called on the Minister of Public Safety, Ralph Goodale, to fulfill his own private member’s motion, Motion No. 446. In 2013, Mr Goodale presented Motion No. 446, which called on the Government to “install an appropriate number and calibre of automated external defibrillators… with priority being assigned to all RCMP offices and vehicles.” The full text of the Minister’s motion is available here.
Today, one year after becoming the minister responsible for the RCMP, Minister Goodale has done nothing, and RCMP cruisers still are not equipped with defibrillators.
Equipping police vehicles with defibrillators is a proven and cost-effective way to dramatically increase survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest. Based on the data from police departments which already equip their vehicles with defibrillators, equipping all RCMP vehicles in this manner could save 320 lives every year.
Last February, in another statement in the Commons, Mr. Reid reminded Minister Goodale of Motion 446. This statement can be read here. Unfortunately, the Minister has still not acted.
Today Mr. Reid noted,
“Following through on Motion 446 a year ago, when the Liberals took office, would have resulted in 5,600 installed defibrillators and 320 saved lives. Why has the minister failed to follow through? What does he say to the families of all the Canadians whose lives he could have saved?”
